It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to all the wonderful staff and students at Aberdeen Elementary.  I have so enjoyed working and learning with everyone. I will really miss being your teacher-librarian, Aberdeen!

With all endings, come new beginnings and that means that I am off to a new library space. I am looking forward to expanding my community of learners, and can't wait for all the fun we will have in the library this school year.

Library Butterflies

Our library learning commons hosted some Painted Lady larvae and then butterflies over the month of May. It was so exciting to watch the larvae complete their journey into butterflies. With the help of our morning book collectors, we successfully released 7 beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies into the garden area at the front of the school.

The caterpillars soon out grew their beginning container.

Shortly after being transferred each caterpillar prepared to form their chrysalis at the top of the net. 

 

 

 

 

Finally ready for release day.

The butterflies left behind some really fascinating stuff, like their final caterpillar skin shed, seven empty chrysalis and intricate webbing. Some of these things can now be found under microscopes in the library.

National Volunteer Week

April 7- 13 was National Volunteer Week, and we have some really fantastic library volunteers to celebrate. Our volunteers help us with morning book collection, shelving and displays. They are a great help to us, and we are always happy to see them in the library.

A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Guido for organizing a fantastic event to recognize our super helpers and thank them for "Chipin' In at the Library!” We enjoyed playing a game and snacking on chips and juice with all who were able to attend.

Day of Sucwentwecw Displays

Spring has been a busy time in the library and school!

Our library learning commons has been transformed into an art gallery in honour of the Day of Sucwentwecw. Thank you to all who brought down their wonderful art to display. Below are just a few of the great displays featured in the library right now.

Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day is coming up! Why will we wear pink on Wednesday, February 27th? Below is a piece from an article about the incident that inspired Pink Shirt Day.

“David Shepherd, Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied [for wearing a pink shirt]…[They] took a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school. ‘I learned that two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders,’ says Mr. Price, 17, who organized the pink protest. ‘Finally, someone stood up for a weaker kid.’ So Mr. Shepherd and some other headed off to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag. As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. ‘It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders,’ Mr. Price recalled. The bullies were never heard from again.”

By wearing a pink shirt on February 27th, you let others know that you will not stand for bullying of any kind in your community.

New Year, New faces, New books!

Happy New Year! I am your new librarian, Mrs. Anderson. I am so excited to be in the library at Aberdeen Elementary for the rest of the school year. I am looking forward to learning, reading and working with all of you.
